The Internal Revenue Service is reminding U.S. citizens and resident aliens living or working outside the United States that their 2024 federal income tax return is due by Monday, June 16, 2025. This extended deadline also applies to individuals with dual citizenship and members of the military stationed abroad.

Who Qualifies for the June Extension?
If you live outside the U.S. or Puerto Rico and your main place of business or duty post is also outside these areas, you’re automatically granted a two-month extension from the typical April 15 deadline. The same applies to members of the military or naval service on duty outside the United States and Puerto Rico. Because June 15, 2025, falls on a Sunday, the deadline shifts to Monday, June 16.
To take advantage of this extension, attach a statement to your tax return explaining how you meet the criteria.
Need More Time?
If you’re unable to file by June 16, you can request an additional extension to October 15, 2025. Note that this is an extension to file, not to pay. Any 2024 tax payments made after April 15, 2025, will incur interest.
Extensions can be requested electronically through the IRS website or by submitting payment online. If electronic filing isn’t an option, you can mail Form 4868 for individuals or Form 7004 for businesses to request a six-month filing extension.
Making a Payment
The IRS provides several convenient ways to make payments:
- IRS Online Account
- IRS Direct Pay
- Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS)
For those without a U.S. bank account, the IRS accepts direct transfers—details are available under Foreign electronic payments. Payments can also be made using a debit card, credit card, or digital wallet, although service fees may apply. For complete payment options, visit the IRS’s Make a payment page.
Special Circumstances and Additional Extensions
Members of the armed forces in combat zones or stationed abroad may qualify for additional automatic extensions. For more information, refer to Publication 3: Armed Forces’ Tax Guide or the Tax Information for Members of the Military page on IRS.gov.
Taxpayers affected by the terrorist attacks in Israel—including those living or doing business in Israel, Gaza, or the West Bank—have until September 30, 2025, to file and pay most taxes originally due between October 7, 2023, and September 30, 2025. This includes individual (Form 1040) and business (Form 1120 series) returns.
Don’t Miss Out on Tax Benefits
Filing a U.S. return while living abroad can make you eligible for tax benefits like the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion and the Foreign Tax Credit. For more guidance, see Publication 54: Tax Guide for U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad.
