A New Jersey resident found himself in hot water after a federal grand jury in Trenton slapped him with charges of tax evasion and obstructing the IRS.
Matthew Tucci, hailing from West Long Branch, allegedly raked in millions of dollars in income during 2015 and 2016 from what he claimed were refunds by the Customs and Tax Administration of the Kingdom of Denmark. However, according to the indictment, he failed to cough up his due taxes, which amounted to over $2 million for those years, as reported in his federal tax returns. Instead, he allegedly went to great lengths to dodge the IRS, splurging over $7.6 million on real estate and attempting to conceal his ownership by transferring titles to nominees. Additionally, he stands accused of feeding the IRS false information and withholding vital facts regarding his financial standing and his capability and intent to pay up.
If found guilty, Tucci could face a maximum sentence of five years behind bars. The final decision on his sentence will lie with a federal district court judge, who will weigh various factors including the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.
Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Stuart M. Goldberg of the Justice Department’s Tax Division and U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger for the District of New Jersey jointly made the announcement.
The IRS Criminal Investigation and the FBI are on the case, delving into the details.
Leading the prosecution team are Senior Litigation Counsel Nanette Davis and Trial Attorney Catriona M. Coppler of the Justice Department’s Tax Division, alongside Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Boden for the District of New Jersey, who heads the Trenton Office.
It’s worth noting that an indictment is just an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
