As part of National Small Business Week, the Internal Revenue Service is reminding small businesses and taxpayers that the risk of fraud and scams continues long after the April 15, 2025, tax deadline. Year-round vigilance is essential.

Small Businesses Should be Vigilant
Earlier in the year, the IRS released its annual “Dirty Dozen” list of common scams. The list includes tactics that often target businesses, such as spear phishing, new client scams, fake charities, misleading social media tax tips, and false claims for tax credits.
Businesses should take active steps to strengthen their security. Key measures include:
- Using anti-malware and antivirus software with automatic updates,
- Requiring strong passwords,
- Enabling multi-factor authentication, and
- Avoiding entering sensitive information on unsecured websites.
The IRS encourages business owners to consult Publication 5961 for additional guidance on protecting against tax-related scams.
Protecting your Employer Identification Number (EIN) is also critical. Keep EIN records secure and ensure all information is current. To update EIN details, use Form 8822-B to avoid identity theft and unauthorized use.
The IRS also warns of scams that surface during disaster season. Fraudsters may impersonate IRS employees and claim to assist with casualty loss claims. Survivors of disasters can contact the IRS disaster assistance line at 866-562-5227 for legitimate help with tax-related issues.
Businesses are encouraged to train employees on cybersecurity practices to protect both personal and company data. Resources like IRS Identity Theft Central and other security publications are available to support ongoing awareness efforts.
Suspicious activity can be reported through the following channels:
- Email tax-related phishing scams to: phishing@irs.gov
- Report W-2 related data losses to: dataloss@irs.gov
- Notify states of identity theft incidents via: statealert@taxadmin.org
Remaining proactive and informed is essential to protecting your business and employees from evolving threats.
