Due to the widespread impact of Hurricane Helene, the IRS has granted a two-week tax filing extension to residents in Georgia and several other southeastern states. Georgia taxpayers now have until May 1, 2025 to file their federal returns—pushed back from the standard April 15 deadline.

May 1st - Tax Deadline

This extension applies statewide in Georgia, as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) declared all 159 counties disaster areas in the aftermath of the storm. That means every Georgia resident qualifies for the delayed filing deadline without needing to apply or request special consideration.

The IRS relief also extends to several other states including Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Parts of Tennessee and Virginia are also included.

Hurricane Helene, a powerful Category 4 storm, hit Georgia in late September, bringing dangerous winds, torrential rains, and coastal storm surges of up to 20 feet. Middle Georgia, including the Augusta area, saw some of the most severe damage. In total, the storm caused 220 fatalities, with 37 deaths reported in Georgia.
