Governor Brian Kemp signed two bills into law on April 15, providing direct payments of up to $500 for eligible Georgia taxpayers. These measures, House Bill 111 and House Bill 112, aim to put money back in the hands of hardworking Georgians, as Kemp noted during the signing event alongside First Lady Marty Kemp, members of the Georgia General Assembly, and local leaders.

How Much is the Rebate?

Eligible taxpayers will receive the following amounts based on their filing status:

  • $250 for single filers or those married filing separately.
  • $375 for head of household filers.
  • $500 for married couples filing jointly.

When Will You Receive the Rebates?

State officials estimate that eligible taxpayers will start receiving their refunds within six to eight weeks if they filed by the May 1 extended deadline. However, a precise date for the first payments has not been announced.

Who Qualifies for Georgia's Rebate?

To be eligible for the rebate, you must:

  • File a Georgia income tax return for both 2023 and 2024.
  • Not be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s 2023 return.
  • Be a full-time Georgia resident for tax purposes.

It’s important to note that any outstanding debts owed to the state may reduce or offset the rebate amount.

How Will the Rebate Be Sent?

Rebates will be issued automatically once your 2024 tax return is processed. Depending on the instructions you included when filing, payments will be made via direct deposit or mailed as a check.

These rebates are not considered taxable income under Georgia law, and no interest will be added to the payments. The state may apply your rebate to any outstanding debts before issuing the refund.

How to Check the Status of Your Tax Rebate

While the tax refund tracker currently only shows information for previous years, an update for these rebates is expected soon. Once available, you’ll need your Social Security Number or ITIN and the amount of your federal adjusted gross income listed on your 2023 tax year return to check the status.
