As the 2025 tax season approaches, the IRS is reminding taxpayers to enhance their identity security by signing up for an Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN). This extra measure helps protect against tax-related identity theft.

To get started, taxpayers can create or log into an IRS Online Account, which provides a simple way to obtain an IP PIN. It’s recommended to sign up before November 23, 2024, as the system will be unavailable for maintenance until early January 2025. Signing up early ensures you’ll have your new IP PIN ready for the 2025 filing season.

An IP PIN is a six-digit number designed to prevent unauthorized filing of federal tax returns using your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. It’s a key tool for protecting your personal and financial information during tax season. The IP PIN, known only to you and the IRS, confirms your identity when filing your return, adding an additional layer of security.

Information About IP PINs

  • IP PINs are valid for one calendar year. A new IP PIN is generated at the beginning of each year.
  • Some users will receive their IP PIN by mail, while others must log into their Online Account to retrieve it.
  • Once enrolled, you can access your IP PIN by logging into your Online Account.
  • The IP PIN must be used on all federal tax returns filed during the year, including prior year or amended returns.
  • IP PINs should only be shared with the IRS and your tax preparation provider. The IRS will never request your IP PIN via phone, email, or text.
  • Taxpayers can currently get an IP PIN for 2024, with new IP PINs available starting January 2025.
  • Those enrolled in the program but not victims of identity theft can opt out of the IP PIN program via their Online Account

How to Request an IP PIN

The easiest way to request an IP PIN is through the IRS Online Account, where you’ll need to complete identity verification steps. Spouses and dependents can also obtain an IP PIN after verification. Once issued, the IP PIN must be used for both electronic and paper tax returns.

To request an IP PIN, visit IRS.gov, create or log into your online account, and follow the identity verification steps. Once verified, select the profile tab to request your IP PIN. The number will need to be used for federal tax returns filed during the current year, as well as any previous years’ returns filed within that period.

If you are unable to create an Online Account, other methods are available, including in-person authentication at a Taxpayer Assistance Center. More details can be found on the IRS website under “Get an Identity Protection PIN.”
