The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has successfully inaugurated the beginning of the 2024 tax season, accepting and processing federal individual tax returns on January 29th. This initiative is aligned with the agency’s ongoing commitment to expanding options that facilitate and enhance the taxpayer experience.

Anticipating a substantial influx, the IRS foresees over 146 million individual tax returns for the 2023 fiscal year to be filed during this particular season, culminating on the deadline of April 15, 2024.

Where’s My Refund

In tandem with the initiation of the 2024 filing season, the IRS is strategically extending service hours at nearly 250 Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs) across the nation, thereby fortifying their commitment to providing additional assistance to taxpayers. Furthermore, the agency is diligently working on refining its phone service and amplifying its suite of online tools. Notably, the “Where’s My Refund?” tool on IRS.gov is slated to incorporate additional details, catering to taxpayers seeking real-time updates on the status of their tax refunds.

IRS Improvements

Building upon the accomplishments of the 2023 tax season, which witnessed significant enhancements following the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, the 2024 filing season is poised to sustain the momentum of service improvements for taxpayers.

IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel underscored the agency’s dedication, stating, “For months, IRS employees have been working hard to be ready to help taxpayers and make tax season as easy and smooth as possible. We’ve taken important steps to add more improvements to help taxpayers, ranging from expanded in-person hours, better online options, and improved phone service.”

A crucial reminder is extended to taxpayers regarding the deadline for filing their 2023 tax returns and settling any outstanding tax liabilities, which is set for Monday, April 15, 2024. Residents of Maine or Massachusetts are granted an extension until April 17, 2024, in observance of the Patriot’s Day and Emancipation Day holidays. Additionally, taxpayers residing in federally declared disaster areas may qualify for additional filing time.
